R I D E R S
Premiere: 13th of November 2012 in PONEC – the dance venue / Prague
Dedicated to Svatava Klenovská
Riders draws inspiration from birds and the role they have played in our culture and traditions. Birds are silent witnesses to our stories and as such they are exceptional: their world is elsewhere, it is a world of different dimensions. Birds have always played an important role in mythology, faith and our spiritual richness. Who are the true “Riders” of our planet? Is it birds with their capacity to move freely around the world? Or is it us, with our capacity to destroy everything within hours?
We’re here, we are among you. We are fast, we don’t respect the wind. We are strong, yet vulnerable. We love to watch you while you seldom know about us. We can’t change your destinies but you often change ours. We share one world but watch it from different perspectives. Does this mean that we can also share the same values?
"We have learned to fly the air like birds and swim the sea like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living together as brothers. George Bernard Shaw

(THE HERALD / MARY BRENNAN)

(THE GUARDIAN / JUDITH MACRELL)
"If this season someone were to see just one domestic dance performance it should be Riders, which has to be in the running for best dance event of the year.Vagnerová is a poet with a rich kinetic dictionary and a talent for innovation and surprise."
(AKTUALNE.CZ / JAKUB NOVÁK)
"This must be seen! It is poetry in dance, for which any attempt at description is too brief."
"Riders is for me an unforgettable performance – a kinetic feast where the individual images bind the aesthetic with rich layers of association. Rarely has a work of choreography made me so marvel at the wordless expression of talent, of kinetic and intellectual intelligence, the distinctiveness of vision at existential questions and also the ability to transform personal experience into artistic truth."
(DANCE NEWS / HELANA KOZÁROVÁ)
"Lenka Vagnerová is the doyenne of contemporary dance theatre. And with Riders, her latest show, she confirms her reputation as the most talented Czech choreographer of her generation."
"Great choreographer, great team, hit of the season!"
(HOSPODÁŘSKÉ NEWSPAPER / NINA VANGELI)
"Riders – a work of many positions, references, atmospheres, a work unpredictable but characteristically as pure and strong as a Baroque chord.
The combination of emotions created by the percussive music and a lighting design that suggests the magical atmosphere of a lustrous world, gives the impression of ancient empires and their myths."
"Its urgency is calm, objective, transfixing. It is also intrinsic in the dancers’ movements – the way they go to the utmost, to the blood, they are precise, concentrated. Lenka Vagnerová has succeeded in moving on the quality of corporeal thought. In this lies the true talent of the choreographer!"
(DANCE ZONE / JANA NÁVRATOVÁ)
